Porto Alegre Cleans 5 Tons of Waste After New Year

The Municipal Department of Urban Cleaning (DMLU) collected 5 tons of waste from the Guaíba waterfront following New Year celebrations in Porto Alegre. Officials expect to gather an additional 3 tons by the end of the morning.

Approximately 200 workers were mobilized for the cleanup operation. The workforce was divided into two groups: 90 professionals worked between 0h and 7h, while a second group of 110 began activities at 7h30.

The operation focused on the Presidente João Goulart and Edvaldo Pereira Paiva avenues. Waste was transported to the sanitary landfill in Minas do Leão, about 100 km from the capital.

The cleanup effort at the Guaíba waterfront began immediately after the New Year's Eve festivities concluded. The DMLU deployed specific resources to handle the volume of waste left behind by attendees. The operation required a coordinated effort to address the debris scattered across the area.

Attendees left various types of refuse at the location. The waste included:

• Alcoholic beverage bottles
• Cups
• Shopping bags
• Packaging materials

The cleanup involved specific mechanical and manual processes. A pipe truck was utilized for washing the roadways, while a compactor truck was used to collect the accumulated residues. These vehicles supported the manual labor provided by the municipal workers on site.

The 200 municipal workers were organized into two distinct shifts to ensure continuous cleaning throughout the morning. The first group of 90 professionals started the work at midnight and continued until 7h.

A second shift was deployed shortly after. This group consisted of 110 workers who began their tasks at 7h30. The shift rotation allowed for sustained efforts in sweeping and washing the affected avenues and the waterfront area.

While the DMLU managed the main thoroughfares, specific areas had different oversight. The internal cleaning of Harmony Park was the responsibility of the concessionaire GAM3 Parks.

The collected materials were processed and transported for final disposal. The 5 tons of waste gathered in the initial phase were sent to the sanitary landfill located in Minas do Leão. This facility is situated approximately 100 kilometers from the capital of Porto Alegre.

Officials noted that the initial numbers were not yet definitive. The prefecture projected that the total amount of waste collected would increase as the morning progressed, estimating that an additional 3 tons would be added to the initial 5 tons.
