The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has finalized a major update to traffic regulations effective January 1, 2026. The most immediate change for drivers is the total replacement of emergency triangles with V16 connected beacons. This new safety protocol is currently the only reform that has entered into force.

Although the DGT is actively working on broader legislative changes, including mandatory insurance for electric scooters and the regulation of Personal Mobility Vehicles, these initiatives remain in the drafting phase. The agency has confirmed that there is no scheduled date for these additional measures, as the project is still under development.

As of the start of the new year, the familiar emergency triangles used by motorists are officially obsolete. The Dirección General de Tráfico has mandated that the V16 connected beacon is now the only acceptable method for signaling a stopped vehicle on public roads.
