Quick Summary
A small company called PopuMusic is showing off an intriguing set of products at CES to make the process easier. PartyKeys and PartyStudio are a 36-key MIDI keyboard and MIDI / Bluetooth speaker that pair together in seamless fashion.
The PartyStudio is particularly interesting because it has a built-in library of 128 instrument tones and more than 50 different drum machine patterns. Naturally, it works with the PartyKeys, but any MIDI keyboard can connect to it and use those sounds. The speaker seems to hit a nice balance of portability and power; it has two tweeters and two woofers and weighs in at 3.75 pounds.
Both devices use NFC to connect to each other — you can just tap and hold the keyboard up to the speaker for pairing. You can connect up to three devices using MIDI over Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE MIDI) as well as a fourth using a wired connection. If you have more than one keyboard, meanwhile, you can connect them together with NFC as well — you can pair three keyboards together total, giving you a huge 108-key surface to play.
Hardware Design and Connectivity 🔗
The PartyStudio and PartyKeys both use NFC to connect to each other. Users can simply tap and hold the keyboard up to the speaker for pairing. This seamless connection method extends to multiple devices as well. If a user has more than one keyboard, they can connect them together with NFC, pairing up to three keyboards in total. This configuration creates a massive 108-key surface to play.
In terms of connectivity options, the system is versatile. You can connect up to three devices using MIDI over Bluetooth Low-Energy (BLE MIDI). Additionally, a fourth device can be connected using a wired connection. Both the PartyStudio and PartyKeys have an understated but appealing look and are available in black or white. The devices feel quite substantial and well-made.
The PartyStudio speaker specifically hits a nice balance of portability and power. It features two tweeters and two woofers. It measures about 13.5 inches wide, 5.2 inches tall, and 4 inches deep. While not a tiny speaker meant to be thrown carelessly into a bag, the attached handle makes it easy to tote around.
Software and Learning Features 🎹
Beyond the physical hardware, the PartyStudio and PartyKeys feature significant software capabilities. Using a companion app, multiple people can play along with a song simultaneously. The light-up keyboard feature shows users what to play, and if multiple people are playing, each keyboard can display complimentary parts.
The learning system starts with simple three-key chord voicings. However, the system also supports a more advanced interface. A demo showed a familiar Guitar Hero-style interface where different notes fly down the screen. This makes for a more involved and advanced performance experience, catering to different skill levels.
