I spent years traveling nonstop. It took me too long to admit my 'dream life' was actually horrible for my health.
Lifestyle

I spent years traveling nonstop. It took me too long to admit my 'dream life' was actually horrible for my health.

Traveling nonstop sounds incredible, but it can come with some serious drawbacks. Meredith Bethune For years, I happily travelled nonstop for work, ignoring the toll it was taking on my health. When my mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I felt pushed to finally take care of myself. I don't travel as much anymore, I eat a more balanced diet, exercise, and I feel much better. I was living the dream — flying internationally nearly once a month for my work as a travel writer, crisscrossing the globe to cover incredible destinations. Invitations like cruising the Norwegian coastline and then jetting off to a buzzy restaurant opening in Las Vegas were too good to refuse, even if they were happening back-to-back. Meanwhile, the frequent long-haul flights, indulgent meals, packed itineraries, and erratic sleep schedules were quietly taking a toll on my health — I was gaining a substantial amount of weight and frequently feeling exhausted. I just told myself that less-than-stellar health was just the price of admission for this sort of career. After all, my job consisted of bucket-list-worthy experiences, like hiking in Peru and going on safari in Kenya! It took me several years to admit to myself that I couldn't keep living this way. As much as I love traveling, doing it nonstop wasn't great for my physical or mental health I love traveling, but it can be exhausting. Meredith Bethune In reality, the job of my dreams consisted of overnight flights where I'd get little to no rest, then hit the ground running as soon as I arrived at my destinations. After I'd fly back home from some trips, it would take me nearly a week to recover from jet lag. My stress levels were often cranked up, dealing with flight delays, deadlines, and navigation across different states and countries. With grueling daily schedules on the road, I rarely had time to answer emails. I'd come home to a full inbox and even fuller calendar. The regular exposure to dry air on planes wasn't helping my immune system, and neither was all the stress. I felt like I was constantly getting sick with colds, flus, or whatever was going around. Meanwhile, my diet wasn't balanced or nutritious. It largely consisted of indulgent meals on press trips, where I felt pressure to try everything so I could write about it. Saying no felt awkward, even when I knew I'd feel better if I could set firmer boundaries. I've been able to see many places through my work as a travel writer. Meredith Bethune On top of all that, I wasn't exercising. After all, press trips run on tight schedules. I'd return to the hotel late, wake up early, sit in a van for hours between stops, and finish the day with a multicourse dinner. Some fellow writers managed to fit in workouts, but I didn't. It wasn't a priority for me then. All the travel felt isolating at times, too. I was spending most of my days with publicists, fellow writers, and guides. They were all lovely people, but not permanent fixtures in my life. My closest friends lived far away, and I kept postponing visits because I was always either traveling or catching up from being away. Meanwhile, my parents were getting older and needed more support. After nearly a decade of jet-setting, by 2019, it had become undeniable that my mother's memory problems went beyond normal aging. Finally, I felt compelled to take my health seriously. My mother's diagnosis felt like a wake-up call to prioritize my well-being Eventually, I realized I couldn't travel so much without facing some consequences for my own health. Meredith Bethune By that time, my mother's cognitive difficulties had progressed so much that she no longer seemed like herself. And though her official Alzheimer's diagnosis came later, by then, it was just a formality. We had already known for years. There wasn't anything I could do to stop my mom's Alzheimer's from progressing, but I threw myself into researching the disease so I could know more about what the future held for her and, eventually, me. I worried whether a similar diagnosis — one millions of Americans share — could be in the cards for me someday. Though it's not preventable, some studies and members of the medical community suggest that certain lifestyle changes, like being physically active and managing blood sugar and blood pressure levels, may lower one's risk of developing some forms of the disease or delay its symptoms. Even if I couldn't prevent a future diagnosis, I knew finally taking care of my body and mind would be good for me. All that nonstop travel had been quietly wrecking my health, and the way I'd been living and working wasn't sustainable. I feel much better now that I'm traveling way less I can't control the future, but I can at least prioritize my health. Meredith Bethune It's been over five years since I significantly cut back on travel. I exercise almost every day and try to regularly follow a balanced diet. I've since lost over 50 pounds and sleep much better. When I do go on trips, I do so with more intention and a lot of focus on the Northeast, close to home. I probably take an overnight or weekend trip within driving distance about every six weeks. I still fly for work once or twice a year, but I'm no longer constantly on the road, and my body feels the difference. When I go on bigger trips, I actually feel like I have more opportunities than I did before. Recently, I even hiked the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim, which I would never have attempted back when I was out of shape and constantly feeling drained. Giving up on my dream job wasn't easy, but I want to feel good and stay in great shape for as long as I can — even if that means finding peace at home instead of abroad. FTX exec Caroline Ellison is now a free woman

FTX exec Caroline Ellison has been released from prison. Michael M. Santiago/Getty Images Caroline Ellison, the exec involved in the FTX scandal, has been released from federal custody. The former Alameda Research CEO had been in federal custody for roughly 14 months. She was sentenced to two years in prison for her involvement in a crypto fraud with Sam Bankman-Fried. Caroline Ellison, the former cryptocurrency executive and ex-girlfriend of Sam Bankman-Fried, is now a free woman. Ellison, 32, was officially released from the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Wednesday after about 14 months, a BOP spokesperson told Business Insider on Thursday. BOP spokesperson Donald Murphy said Thursday that Ellison was released Wednesday from what's known as community confinement, which means home confinement or a halfway house. As Business Insider previously reported, the ex-FTX insider was quietly moved to community confinement from a Connecticut prison in October after serving roughly 11 months of her two-year sentence. Attorneys for Ellison declined to comment. In December, online prison records listed Ellison's projected release date as February 20, but that date was pushed up about a month at some point, allowing for an even earlier release. Ellison was sentenced to two years in prison in September 2024 after she pleaded guilty to conspiring with FTX founder Bankman-Fried in an $11 billion fraud scheme. The sentence also included three years of supervised release after prison time. She was the CEO of Alameda Research, a trading firm founded by Bankman-Fried that helped FTX siphon money off of customers. Ellison was the star witness in Bankman-Fried's 2023 criminal trial. At her sentencing hearing, US District Judge Lewis Kaplan commended Ellison for her "very, very substantial cooperation" and her genuine remorse. However, the judge handed down a prison sentence because of the scale of the fraud, rather than the zero time behind bars her attorneys had asked for. "For it to be a case this serious, to be a literal get-out-of-jail-free card — I cannot see a way to it," Kaplan said at the time. Bankman-Fried was found guilty of seven counts of wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy charges in Manhattan federal court. He is serving a 25-year sentence at a federal correctional institution in Los Angeles while appealing his conviction and sentence. Read the original article on Business Insider

Launch HN: Constellation Space (YC W26) – AI for satellite mission assurance

Hi HN! We're Kamran, Raaid, Laith, and Omeed from Constellation Space. We built an AI system that predicts satellite link failures before they happen (https://youtu.be/069V9fADAtM). Between us, we've spent years working on satellite operations at SpaceX, Blue Origin, and NASA. At SpaceX, we managed constellation health for Starlink. At Blue, we worked on next-gen test infra for New Glenn. At NASA, we dealt with deep space communications. The same problem kept coming up: by the time you notice a link is degrading, you've often already lost data. The core issue is that satellite RF links are affected by dozens of interacting variables. A satellite passes overhead, and you need to predict whether the link will hold for the next few minutes. That depends on: the orbital geometry (elevation angle changes constantly), tropospheric attenuation (humidity affects signal loss via ITU-R P.676), rain fade (calculated via ITU-R P.618 - rain rates in mm/hr translate directly to dB of loss at Ka-band and above), ionospheric scintillation (we track the KP index from magnetometer networks), and network congestion on top of all that. The traditional approach is reactive. Operators watch dashboards, and when SNR drops below a threshold, they manually reroute traffic or switch to a backup link. With 10,000 satellites in orbit today and 70,000+ projected by 2030, this doesn't scale. Our system ingests telemetry at around 100,000 messages per second from satellites, ground stations, weather radar, IoT humidity sensors, and space weather monitors. We run physics-based models in real-time - the full link budget equations, ITU atmospheric standards, orbital propagation - to compute what should be happening. Then we layer ML models on top, trained on billions of data points from actual multi-orbit operations. The ML piece is where it gets interesting. We use federated learning because constellation operators (understandably) don't want to share raw telemetry. Each constellation trains local models on their own data, and we aggregate only the high-level patterns. This gives us transfer learning across different orbit types and frequency bands - learnings from LEO Ka-band links help optimize MEO or GEO operations. We can predict most link failures 3-5 minutes out with >90% accuracy, which gives enough time to reroute traffic before data loss. The system is fully containerized (Docker/Kubernetes) and deploys on-premise for air-gapped environments, on GovCloud (AWS GovCloud, Azure Government), or standard commercial clouds. Right now we're testing with defense and commercial partners. The dashboard shows real-time link health, forecasts at 60/180/300 seconds out, and root cause analysis (is this rain fade? satellite setting below horizon? congestion?). We expose everything via API - telemetry ingestion, predictions, topology snapshots, even an LLM chat endpoint for natural language troubleshooting. The hard parts we're still working on: prediction accuracy degrades for longer time horizons (beyond 5 minutes gets dicey), we need more labeled failure data for rare edge cases, and the federated learning setup requires careful orchestration across different operators' security boundaries. We'd love feedback from anyone who's worked on satellite ops, RF link modeling, or time-series prediction at scale. What are we missing? What would make this actually useful in a production NOC environment? Happy to answer any technical questions! Comments URL: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46721933 Points: 4 # Comments: 0
