Paraná Heatwave: 169 Cities on Orange Alert

A severe heatwave has gripped the state of Paraná, prompting the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) to issue an orange alert for 169 municipalities. Issued on Thursday, December 25, the alert signifies 'danger' due to temperatures rising 5°C above the historical average, creating health risks for the population.

The warning remains in effect until 6:00 PM on Friday, December 26. During this period, several cities are recording high temperatures, with Londrina and Maringá expected to hit 33°C, and Paranavaí and Jacarezinho reaching 34°C. Residents are urged to contact Civil Defense in case of emergencies.

While the state faces extreme heat, the State Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar) also forecasts instability. Meteorologist Paulo Barbieri indicated that thunderstorms are likely in the west and southwest regions, with expected rainfall accumulation in cities like Pato Branco. Furthermore, yellow storm alerts cover the northern, northwestern, central, and southern regions until Friday morning.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has classified the current weather situation in Paraná as critical. The orange alert, which is the second level in the warning system, indicates a direct threat to public health. The primary concern is the temperature deviation, which stands at 5°C above the historical average for the region.

Specific temperature forecasts for Thursday include:

• 33°C in Londrina and Maringá
• 34°C in Paranavaí and Jacarezinho

The alert is scheduled to remain active until 18:00 on Friday, December 26. Authorities have emphasized that this weather event requires caution, particularly for vulnerable populations. The guidance issued to the public is to seek the assistance of the Defesa Civil (Civil Defense) in cases of emergency or weather-related incidents.

Despite the intense heat, the Sistema de Tecnologia e Monitoramento Ambiental do Paraná (Simepar) has forecasted precipitation for the holiday. According to meteorologist Paulo Barbieri, the state should expect scattered rain showers accompanied by thunderstorms.

The regions with the highest probability of rain are the west and southwest of the state. Specific rainfall projections include:

• Pato Branco: 11 mm
• União da Vitória: 4.1 mm
• Foz do Iguaçu: 3.2 mm

Furthermore, Simepar reported that a new area of instability advanced over the state during the early hours of Thursday morning. This system brought thunderstorms to the northwest region. Meteorologist Bianca Pinheiro de Angelo confirmed the occurrence of lightning and rain showers in that area.
