A New Voice in Spanish Cinema#

Alauda Ruiz de Azúa has emerged as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary Spanish cinema. Born in Barakaldo in 1978, the director has crafted films that challenge audiences to confront uncomfortable truths about family, spirituality, and social expectations.

Her latest work, Los domingos, represents a significant milestone in her career, earning 13 nominations at the prestigious Goya Awards, including recognition for Best Director. This achievement places her among the most celebrated filmmakers working in Spain today.

What sets Ruiz de Azúa apart is her refusal to offer easy answers. Instead, she creates space for viewers to grapple with complex moral questions, making her one of the most important directors of her generation.

Exploring the Uncomfortable#

Ruiz de Azúa's filmography demonstrates a consistent commitment to examining difficult subjects through a human lens. Her work spans multiple narratives that explore the psychological landscapes of her characters.

In Los domingos, she ventures into the mind of a teenager who decides to become a nun—a choice that defies contemporary expectations about youth and spirituality. The film examines what happens inside the head of someone making such a profound life decision.

Her previous work includes:

  • A reconstruction of a family marked by psychological abuse from a father figure
  • A story about a first-time mother who must care for both her child and her own parent
  • Exploration of themes that challenge conventional social narratives

These films share a common thread: they refuse to simplify human experience into easy categories or moral judgments.

"A mí no me interesa el cine que te deja un marco de conversación muy restringido, donde simplemente puedes estar a favor o en contra de algo."

— Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, Director

Rejecting Binary Thinking#

Ruiz de Azúa's approach to filmmaking is defined by her resistance to black-and-white perspectives. She actively seeks out the gray areas where most filmmakers fear to tread.

A mí no me interesa el cine que te deja un marco de conversación muy restringido, donde simplemente puedes estar a favor o en contra de algo.

This philosophy translates into films that resist easy categorization. Rather than creating narratives that simply take sides, Ruiz de Azúa presents situations that demand genuine reflection from her audience.

Her work suggests that the most important stories are often those that exist between the lines of conventional debate. By focusing on psychological complexity rather than ideological simplicity, she creates cinema that lingers long after the credits roll.

Understanding Contemporary Youth#

Ruiz de Azúa brings a nuanced perspective to her portrayal of young people, refusing to fall into the trap of generational criticism. She understands that today's youth are products of the world adults have created.

Her films reflect a deep empathy for adolescents navigating an increasingly complex social landscape. Rather than blaming young people for their choices, she examines the context that shapes those decisions.

This approach is particularly evident in her exploration of teenage spirituality. By asking what leads a young person to seek meaning in religion, she opens conversations about identity, belonging, and purpose in modern society.

Her work suggests that understanding requires listening rather than judging—a perspective that makes her films both timely and timeless.

Looking to the Future#

Following her success with Los domingos, Ruiz de Azúa continues to push boundaries with new projects. She is currently preparing a series that explores the world of OnlyFans, another example of her willingness to tackle contemporary phenomena that many filmmakers might avoid.

This upcoming project demonstrates her commitment to examining how technology and social media reshape human relationships and self-perception. Like her previous work, it promises to ask difficult questions rather than provide simple answers.

Ruiz de Azúa's career trajectory suggests an artist who will continue evolving, always seeking new ways to explore the human condition. Her ability to balance critical acclaim with commercial success positions her as a leading voice in Spanish cinema for years to come.

As she moves forward, audiences can expect more films that challenge, provoke, and ultimately illuminate the complexities of contemporary life.

The Director's Legacy#

Alauda Ruiz de Azúa represents a new generation of Spanish filmmakers who refuse to compromise artistic vision for easy answers. Her 13 Goya nominations for Los domingos validate her approach to storytelling.

Her films demonstrate that cinema can be both intellectually rigorous and emotionally resonant. By exploring themes of spirituality, family trauma, and social change, she creates work that speaks to universal human experiences.

Perhaps most importantly, Ruiz de Azúa reminds us that the best questions are often more valuable than simple answers. In a world increasingly divided by binary thinking, her cinema offers a path toward deeper understanding.

Pope Leo's latest AI warning: 'overly affectionate' chatbots

Pope Leo has a new message about responsible AI. Maria Grazia Picciarella/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images Pope Leo XIV urged the regulation of chatbots to prevent emotional manipulation and harm. He warned against personalized chatbots that can replicate friendly or intimate behaviour. Recent lawsuits highlight risks after teens' suicides linked to Character.AI chatbots. Even the pope is worried about how we're talking to chatbots. In a written address for Saturday's World Day of Social Communications, Pope Leo XIV warned against personalized chatbots that can replicate friendly or intimate behavior. "Overly affectionate chatbots, besides being ever-present and readily available, can become hidden architects of our emotional states, thereby invading and occupying the sphere of people's intimacy," the first-ever US-born pope wrote. The pope called for national and international regulations to protect users from forming emotional, deceptive, or manipulative bonds with chatbots. "All stakeholders — from the technology industry to policymakers, from creative businesses to academia, from artists to journalists and educators — must be involved in building and implementing a conscious and responsible digital citizenship," the pope wrote. The Holy See leader has spoken about AI and his concerns with the technology several times since he was elected in May. In his first address since becoming pope, he said he wanted to make AI a focus of his papacy and that the technology poses new challenges for "human dignity, justice, and labor." In November, he wrote to AI leaders on X, calling on them to "cultivate moral discernment" when building AI tools. At the end of last year, the pope met Megan Garcia, a woman whose 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer, died by suicide after interacting with a Character.AI chatbot. Florida-based Garcia filed a lawsuit against chatbot-building startup Character.AI, alleging that the company, which lets people have in-depth and personal conversations with AI chatbots, was responsible for the death of her son, Sewell Setzer III. Earlier this month, Google and the startup agreed to settle multiple lawsuits from families, including Garcia, whose teenagers died by suicide or hurt themselves after interacting with Character.AI's bots. These negotiations are among the first settlements in lawsuits that accuse AI tools of contributing to mental health crises and suicides among teenagers.
