Quick Summary#

Russia has issued a sharp rebuke of Donald Trump's foreign policy approach, accusing the U.S. administration of dismantling established international norms. The criticism centers on what Moscow describes as a return to raw power dynamics in global affairs.

Foreign Minister Serguéi Lavrov articulated these concerns during a review of 2025 events, highlighting a year of failed diplomatic efforts between Moscow and Washington. The statement reflects growing tensions as Russia confronts a U.S. administration it views as increasingly assertive and unconstrained.

A Year of Failed Expectations#

The Kremlin entered 2025 with specific diplomatic objectives regarding Ukraine. Russian officials had anticipated reaching a degree of understanding with the new U.S. government that would allow Moscow to impose its own terms on the conflict.

However, these expectations were not met. The Gobierno estadounidense (U.S. government) under Trump demonstrated a different approach entirely—one that Russian officials characterize as disregarding established diplomatic protocols and power balances.

Key elements of Russia's diplomatic strategy included:

  • Establishing new regional security frameworks
  • Securing recognition of territorial claims
  • Reducing Western influence in Eastern Europe
  • Creating bilateral agreements outside multilateral structures
"All the rules of the international arena have been erased and we are playing a game where the strongest is right."
— Serguéi Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister

Lavrov's Direct Criticism#

Foreign Minister Serguéi Lavrov delivered his assessment during a press conference this Tuesday, offering a stark characterization of current international relations.

"All the rules of the international arena have been erased and we are playing a game where the strongest is right,"

Lavrov stated, expressing frustration with what he perceives as a fundamental shift in how global power is exercised.

The Russian top diplomat's comments reflect a broader concern within the Kremlin that the CIA and other U.S. agencies are operating with fewer restrictions than in previous administrations. This perceived lack of constraints has allowed Washington to pursue policies that directly challenge Russian interests in Eastern Europe and beyond.

The Ukraine Factor#

Ukraine remains the central flashpoint in this diplomatic standoff. Throughout 2025, Moscow sought to leverage its position to secure favorable terms, but encountered resistance from a U.S. administration unwilling to accommodate Russian demands.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and other U.S. agencies have not been directly involved in these geopolitical negotiations, but the broader U.S. government posture has shifted significantly. Trump's approach has been characterized by Russian observers as:

  • More assertive in protecting U.S. interests
  • Less deferential to traditional diplomatic channels
  • Willing to challenge established international norms
  • Openly prioritizing American power projection

This shift has complicated Russia's strategic calculations and forced Moscow to reconsider its diplomatic approach toward Washington.

Implications for Global Order#

The Russia-U.S. relationship has entered a new phase of uncertainty. Lavrov's statement suggests Moscow views the current administration as operating outside traditional diplomatic frameworks that have governed international relations since the Cold War's end.

This perception of unrestrained American power has several implications:

  • Reduced likelihood of diplomatic breakthroughs on key issues
  • Increased reliance on hard power considerations in negotiations
  • Greater unpredictability in international crisis management
  • Potential for escalation in regional conflicts

The Ucrania situation exemplifies these challenges, with both sides appearing entrenched in positions that leave little room for compromise.

Looking Ahead#

Russia's criticism of Donald Trump's foreign policy marks a significant deterioration in bilateral relations. The Kremlin's assessment suggests that the current U.S. administration prioritizes unilateral action over multilateral cooperation.

Looking forward, Moscow appears to be recalibrating its expectations for diplomatic engagement with Washington. The emphasis on power dynamics over established rules indicates a more confrontational relationship may lie ahead.

For international observers, this shift raises questions about the future of global governance structures and the stability of international relations in an era where traditional norms appear increasingly challenged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Russia, through Foreign Minister Serguéi Lavrov, accuses Trump of abandoning established international norms and operating under a 'law of the strongest' approach to diplomacy. Moscow views this as a fundamental shift away from multilateral cooperation toward unilateral power projection.

This criticism reflects a broader concern that traditional diplomatic frameworks are being dismantled. The shift toward raw power dynamics complicates crisis management and reduces the likelihood of diplomatic breakthroughs on key issues like the Ukraine conflict.

Moscow had hoped to reach a degree of understanding with the new U.S. administration that would allow Russia to impose its own terms regarding Ukraine. These expectations were not met, leading to the current diplomatic tensions.

The current trajectory suggests continued confrontation and reduced diplomatic engagement. Moscow appears to be recalibrating its expectations, with the relationship increasingly defined by power considerations rather than traditional diplomatic norms.

As Trump threatens more tariff rises, China uses low duties to secure resources

As US President Donald Trump’s tariff increases have roiled global markets and strained America’s alliances in recent months, China has been pursuing the opposite strategy: keeping import duties low and pledging further cuts as a way to secure strategic resources and build ties across the developing world. China’s average effective tariff rate – calculated by dividing total duties raised by the value of imports – has fallen steadily over the past decade and came to just 1.3 per cent in 2025,...
