10. Warfare

Kicking off our list is the visceral and unflinchingly realistic war film, Warfare. Directed by Alex Garland and former Navy SEAL Ray Mendoza, this movie drops viewers directly into a harrowing surveillance mission gone wrong. It sidesteps grandiose patriotism in favor of raw, tactical realism, creating a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere that has been praised for its authenticity.

The film features a stellar ensemble cast of rising Hollywood stars, including Will Poulter, Joseph Quinn, and Kit Connor, who deliver grounded, human performances. According to industry reports, the film's commitment to realism, based on Mendoza's own experiences, sets it apart from traditional war epics. It's a brutal, necessary, and masterfully crafted examination of modern combat.

  • Directors: Alex Garland & Ray Mendoza
  • Genre: War, Drama, Thriller
  • Key Appeal: Hyper-realistic depiction of combat

9. The Monkey

Proving that the Stephen King adaptation machine is still in top form, The Monkey is a gory and gloriously absurd horror-comedy from director Osgood Perkins. The film centers on estranged twins who believe they destroyed a cursed toy monkey years ago, only for it to reappear and unleash a wave of creatively violent deaths. It's a wild ride that balances buckets of blood with surprisingly insightful themes of mortality and family trauma.

Theo James shines in a dual role, bringing both gravitas and dark humor to the chaotic narrative. Critics have lauded the film for its unique tone, managing to be both terrifying and laugh-out-loud funny. It's a standout in the crowded horror genre, offering a fresh and demented take on a classic premise.

"A gory and gloriously absurd horror comedy... an extremely demented, intriguingly insightful tale." - USA TODAY

8. Black Bag

Steven Soderbergh is a master of genre, and Black Bag is a prime example of his effortless cool. This slick spy thriller stars Michael Fassbender as a British intelligence officer tasked with uncovering a traitor within his own agency—and his own marriage. The film is a delicious whodunit wrapped in a high-stakes espionage plot, filled with sharp dialogue and stylish cinematography.

What makes Black Bag so compelling is its intimate scale. Instead of globe-trotting action, the tension builds through quiet conversations and simmering paranoia in elegant London settings. It's a thinking person's thriller that proves you don't need explosions to keep an audience on the edge of their seats, relying instead on stellar performances and a tightly wound script.

7. The Life of Chuck

Adapted from a novella by Stephen King, The Life of Chuck is a triumphant departure from the author's usual horror fare. Directed by Mike Flanagan, the film tells a unique, three-act story in reverse, chronicling the final three days in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz. It's a profound and deeply moving meditation on life, memory, and the interconnectedness of humanity.

With a career-best performance from Tom Hiddleston and a poignant supporting turn by Mark Hamill, the film has resonated deeply with both critics and audiences. It's a testament to the power of storytelling that finds the extraordinary in the ordinary, leaving viewers with a sense of wonder and a renewed appreciation for the small moments that make up a life.

6. Caught by the Tides

A true critical darling, Caught by the Tides is a masterwork from acclaimed Chinese director Jia Zhangke. The film boasts a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, a testament to its artistic power. It follows a woman's search for her missing lover across the rapidly changing landscape of modern China, blending fiction and documentary to create a haunting portrait of a nation and a relationship in flux.

This is a film that demands patience and rewards it with immense emotional depth. Jia's signature observational style captures the subtle shifts in society, making the personal story feel epic in scope. It's a beautiful, melancholic, and essential piece of international cinema that has rightfully earned its place among the year's most celebrated films.

  • Director: Jia Zhangke
  • Country: China
  • Rotten Tomatoes Score: 99%

5. Nosferatu

Robert Eggers' reimagining of Nosferatu is a gothic horror masterpiece that breathes new life into one of cinema's oldest tales. While faithful to the spirit of the original, Eggers' version is a grand, atmospheric production filled with terrifying set pieces and a palpable sense of dread. The film is a feast for the senses, using light and shadow to create a world that is both beautiful and monstrous.

The performances are uniformly excellent, with Lily-Rose Depp delivering a physically and emotionally demanding turn as the possessed Ellen Hutter. Bill Skarsgård’s Count Orlok is a truly repulsive and uniquely human take on the vampire icon. This is not just a remake; it's a powerful cinematic ritual that will sink its teeth into you.

4. F1 The Movie

Forget what you know about sports movies. F1 The Movie is a high-octane, adrenaline-fueled spectacle that has become one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. Starring Brad Pitt as a veteran driver mentoring a hotshot rookie, the film combines a classic underdog story with cutting-edge, on-track cinematography that puts you right in the driver's seat.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), the film was shot during actual Grand Prix weekends, lending it an unparalleled sense of authenticity and scale. The roar of the engines, the blistering speed, and the high-stakes drama make F1 The Movie the ultimate big-screen experience, proving that practical effects and a timeless story are a winning combination.

3. One Battle After Another

From visionary director Paul Thomas Anderson, One Battle After Another is an American epic that has been hailed as an instant masterpiece. The film follows a pair of childhood friends who reunite as adults to take on a powerful and corrupt institution, leading to a sprawling, decades-spanning narrative. With Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn delivering powerhouse performances, this is a dense, ambitious, and deeply rewarding film.

According to early buzz from Forbes, this is the kind of prestige drama that awards seasons are made of. Anderson's direction is meticulous, weaving together themes of friendship, power, and the American dream into a complex and compelling tapestry. It's a challenging, conversation-starting film that showcases the very best of what Hollywood can achieve.

2. Sinners

Ryan Coogler's first entirely original film since Fruitvale Station, Sinners is a genre-bending triumph that took the world by storm. Blending horror, historical drama, and music, the film tells the story of twin brothers who return to their hometown in the 1930s Deep South, only to face a far greater evil than the racism they expect. It's a powerful, terrifying, and ultimately hopeful film that has been widely praised for its bold vision.

Starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, Sinners has been a major box office success and a cultural phenomenon. Critics have celebrated its ability to tackle serious themes of culture and appropriation while delivering genuine scares and a toe-tapping soundtrack. It's a testament to Coogler's immense talent and a clear contender for the year's best picture.

"Ryan Coogler's first-ever entirely original film — the triumphant 'Sinners'" - SlashFilm

1. Avatar: Fire and Ash

Topping our list is the undisputed cinematic event of the year, Avatar: Fire and Ash. James Cameron once again pushes the boundaries of what's possible on screen, taking audiences to a new, breathtakingly beautiful region of Pandora—the ash-clad lands of the Metkayina clan. The film expands the world in stunning fashion, introducing new cultures, creatures, and conflicts.

While the visual spectacle is undeniable, the film is anchored by a powerful emotional core, exploring themes of grief, community, and the consequences of war. It has shattered box office records worldwide, reaffirming Cameron's status as the king of the blockbuster. For pure, unadulterated cinematic immersion, no other film in 2025 comes close to the experience offered by Avatar: Fire and Ash.

  • Director: James Cameron
  • Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña
  • Box Office: Highest-grossing film of 2025

The Year in Review

Looking back on 2025, it's clear that the year was a resounding success for the film industry. The movies on this list represent a perfect cross-section of what makes cinema so special: the ability to transport us to new worlds, challenge our perspectives, and connect us through shared stories. From the intimate character studies of The Life of Chuck to the universe-spanning adventure of Avatar: Fire and Ash, there was truly something for everyone.

The key takeaway from this year is the undeniable power of original storytelling. While established franchises continued to thrive, it was the fresh, bold visions from directors like Ryan Coogler, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Robert Eggers that generated the most excitement and critical praise. As we look forward to what the future holds, 2025 has set a remarkably high bar for creativity and quality in filmmaking.

Jennifer Lawrence says a 15-minute compromise helps her and her husband make their differences work

Jennifer Lawrence Christopher Polk/2026GG/Penske Media via Getty Images Jennifer Lawrence, 35, says she married someone who is the "opposite" of her. While he is good at sticking to a schedule, it's something she finds challenging, she said. "But we've learned, to keep our marriage alive, I have a 15-minute wiggle room," Lawrence said. Jennifer Lawrence, 35, says one small compromise helps balance her free-spirited personality with her husband's love of structure. "I married somebody who is the opposite of me. He is so organized," Lawrence said during an appearance on Tuesday's episode of the "Smartless" podcast. "He's an anchor. Everything is ordered, like on the sink. Like I have to, you know, like keep the closet doors closed, and I have like my little jobs that I work really hard to do," she said. When asked which of her habits frustrates her husband the most, Lawrence said it was her struggle with timing. "The schedule. So, our kids. I mean, I get it now. I get it. But like they're on a very strict schedule, you know? It's like breakfast, 7:30," the "Hunger Games" actor said. While her husband is good at sticking to a schedule, especially when it comes to their kids, it's something she finds challenging, Lawrence said. "He's good at keeping it. But we've learned, to keep our marriage alive, I have a 15-minute wiggle room," she said. Lawrence has two sons with her husband, Cooke Maroney, whom she married in 2019. This is not the first time that she has talked about her family life. Speaking with Cameron Diaz for Interview magazine in 2021, Lawrence said becoming a mother has made her more selective when it comes to choosing her projects. "There's no squeezing when you have a baby. There's just home, and it's the best. It definitely helps weed out projects: 'Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No. Is this worth being away from my child for half the day?'" she said. Lawrence also credited her husband with making things easier for her as a working mother. "Yeah, and fortunately, my husband is the greatest father in the entire world, so when I'm working, I don't have any more guilt than the usual every day, all-day parent guilt," she said. Lawrence also told Vanity Fair in 2021 that one of her favorite activities is going to the grocery store with her husband. "I don't know why but it fills me with a lot of joy. I think maybe because it's almost a metaphor for marriage. 'Okay, we've got this list. These are the things we need. Let's work together and get this done.'" Lawrence said.
