Quick Summary#

Kia is accelerating its electric vehicle strategy with plans for a model positioned even lower than the upcoming EV2. According to the company's design leadership, this future vehicle would represent a new entry point for the brand's EV lineup.

The move signals a significant expansion of Kia's electrified portfolio, targeting consumers seeking maximum affordability and compact dimensions. While the EV2 is already considered a small vehicle, the proposed model would push these parameters further.

This development highlights the automotive industry's continued push toward accessible electric mobility, with manufacturers racing to produce lower-cost options for urban drivers and first-time EV buyers.

Beyond the EV2#

The automotive world is closely watching Kia's next move following the revelation that the EV2 is merely the beginning of the company's small EV ambitions. The current model is described in glowing terms as a compact solution for modern mobility needs.

However, Kia's designer believes the company should not stop there. The vision extends to creating an even more compact vehicle that would likely carry the EV1 designation, positioning it as the new entry-level electric offering.

This strategic positioning would create a clear hierarchy in Kia's electric lineup:

 • EV9 - Flagship large SUV
 • EV8 - Full-size SUV (potential)
 • EV7 - Mid-size SUV
 • EV6 - Crossover utility vehicle
 • EV5 - Compact SUV
 • EV4 - Sedan/hatchback
 • EV3 - Small crossover
 • EV2 - Micro car
 • EV1 - Ultra-compact (planned)

The EV1 would represent the bottom of this scale, offering maximum efficiency in a minimal footprint.

"The EV2 is tiny, but Kia's designer believes the company should go even smaller."

Design Philosophy#

Kia's approach to vehicle sizing reflects a deep understanding of urban mobility challenges. The designer's comments suggest that size matters when it comes to making electric vehicles practical for dense city environments.

The proposed EV1 would likely prioritize:

 • Ultra-compact dimensions for tight parking
 • Maximum interior space efficiency
 • Lower battery capacity for reduced cost
 • Optimized range for city driving

By creating a vehicle smaller than the EV2, Kia is addressing a specific market segment that values maneuverability and affordability over size and range. This approach mirrors strategies seen in markets like Japan and Europe, where micro-cars are popular.

The EV2 is tiny, but Kia's designer believes the company should go even smaller.

This philosophy indicates that affordability will be a key pillar of the EV1's design, potentially making it one of the most accessible electric vehicles on the market when it eventually launches.

Market Impact#

The introduction of an EV1 would have significant implications for the electric vehicle market. It would represent one of the smallest and most affordable EVs from a major manufacturer, potentially setting new standards for the segment.

Key market considerations include:

 • Competition with other budget EVs like the Citroën ë-C4
 • Challenge to traditional city cars
 • Expansion of Kia's market share in Europe and Asia
 • Pressure on competitors to develop smaller, cheaper models

The timing of this development is crucial. As battery costs continue to decrease and EV technology matures, manufacturers can produce smaller vehicles without compromising profitability.

The EV1 would likely serve as a volume leader for Kia, appealing to first-time car buyers, urban commuters, and fleet operators seeking cost-effective electric solutions.

Technical Considerations#

Creating a viable vehicle smaller than the EV2 presents several engineering challenges. Battery packaging, safety standards, and interior comfort must all be balanced within a more constrained space.

Expected technical specifications might include:

 • Sub-3-meter overall length
 • 200-250 km real-world range
 • Single motor front-wheel-drive configuration
 • Fast-charging capability (50-100kW)
 • Starting price significantly below EV2

The platform strategy will be crucial. Kia may adapt its existing E-GMP architecture or develop a new dedicated platform for smaller vehicles. This decision will impact cost, performance, and scalability.

Manufacturing efficiency will also be paramount. To achieve the target price point, Kia will need to optimize production costs while maintaining quality and safety standards expected from the brand.

Looking Ahead#

The hint at an EV1 model demonstrates Kia's commitment to comprehensive electrification across all market segments. This strategy positions the brand to compete effectively as the industry transitions away from internal combustion engines.

Key takeaways for consumers and industry observers:

 • Kia is planning beyond the EV2 to even smaller models
 • The EV1 would represent the brand's most affordable electric offering
 • Ultra-compact EVs are becoming a strategic focus for major manufacturers
 • Urban mobility solutions are evolving rapidly

While official details about the EV1 remain limited, the direction is clear: smaller, more affordable electric vehicles are coming from Kia. This expansion of the EV lineup will likely continue as the brand seeks to offer an electric alternative for every type of driver and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kia's designer has indicated that the company is planning an even smaller and more affordable electric vehicle that would sit below the EV2 in the lineup. This potential model could be named EV1 and would represent the brand's entry-level electric offering.

The move reflects a strategy to expand Kia's electric vehicle portfolio across all market segments, particularly targeting urban drivers who prioritize compact dimensions and affordability. Smaller EVs also address the growing demand for efficient city transportation solutions.

This development signals that major manufacturers are moving toward ultra-compact, budget-friendly electric vehicles. It could pressure competitors to develop similar small EVs and accelerate the democratization of electric mobility for price-sensitive consumers.

The source only mentions that the EV1 is 'in the pipeline,' indicating early planning stages. No specific timeline or release date has been provided, but the development suggests it would follow the EV2's market launch.

Senate passes Defiance Act for a second time to address Grok deepfakes

The Senate has passed the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits (DEFIANCE ) Act with unanimous consent, according to the bill’s co-sponsor Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL). The bill lets the subjects of nonconsensual, sexually explicit deepfakes take civil action against the people who create and host them. Deepfakes are a known issue online, but without the proper protections, easy access to AI-powered image and video generation tools has made it possible for anyone to create compromising content using another person's likeness. This has become a particular problem on X, where the integration of Grok, the AI assistant created by X's parent company xAI, makes it possible for anyone to turn the content of another person's post into an image-generating prompt. Over the last month, that's allowed users to create sexually explicit images of children, just by replying to a post with @grok and a request. In response, Ofcom, the UK's media regulator, has already opened an investigation into X for potentially violating the Online Safety Act. The chatbot has also been outright blocked in Malaysia and Indonesia. The DEFIANCE Act won't prevent Grok or other AI tools from generating nonconsensual deepfakes, but it would make creating or hosting that content potentially very expensive for anyone on the receiving end of a lawsuit. The Senate passed an earlier version of the DEFIANCE Act in 2024, but it stalled in the House. Given the urgency of Grok's deepfake problem, the hope is this new version of the bill won't see the same resistance. Congress passed an earlier piece of deepfake regulation last year, the Take It Down Act, with bipartisan support. That bill was focused on the companies who host nonconsensual, sexually explicit content, rather than the people exploited by it. Anthropic says its buzzy new Claude Cowork tool was mostly built by AI — in less than 2 weeks

Anthropic's Claude Cowork AI tool, which has launched as a research preview this week. Anthropic Anthropic employees used Claude to build Cowork, its new agentic tool launched this week. The AI startup said that it saw a number of customers were using Claude Code for non-coding tasks, inspiring Cowork. The new tool, which is in preview, has generated buzz in the AI community. Anthropic's new working agent was largely built by Claude itself — the latest example of AI coding tools speeding up product development. On Monday, Anthropic announced the release of Cowork, a "more approachable" AI tool accompanying Claude Code that's geared toward fulfilling users' requests that are unrelated to programming. Users grant the agentic AI tool access to specific files on their computer and prompt it to complete tasks. Boris Cherny, head of Claude Code, said that Anthropic's AI coded "pretty much all" of Cowork. "@claudeai wrote Cowork," Product Manager Felix Rieseberg wrote on X. "Us humans meet in-person to discuss foundational architectural and product decisions, but all of us devs manage anywhere between 3 to 8 Claude instances implementing features, fixing bugs, or researching potential solutions." As a result, Rieseberg said the first edition of Cowork came together quickly. "This is the product that my team has built here, we sprinted at this for the last week and a half," he said during a livestream with Dan Shipper. Over the holidays, Rieseberg said that Anthropic saw its customers using Claude for an increasing number of non-coding-related tasks. "This sort of like the research preview, very early Alpha, a lot of rough edges, as you've already seen, right?" he said. Cowork is initially available to Claude Max subscribers on the Mac app. The launch has made a splash in the tech world, with many online users praising the product and its accessibility. "I think that's a really smart product," Datasette co-creator Simon Willison wrote in a blog about his experience. "Claude Code has an enormous amount of value that hasn't yet been unlocked for a general audience, and this seems like a pragmatic approach." "This is big," Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian wrote on X. Because granting an AI agent access and the ability to take action on specific computer files comes with risk, Anthropic cautions that Cowork users should be careful. "By default, the main thing to know is that Claude can take potentially destructive actions (such as deleting local files) if it's instructed to," the company said. "Since there's always some chance that Claude might misinterpret your instructions, you should give Claude very clear guidance around things like this. " The latest in a flurry of AI announcements AI companies wasted no time in launching new offerings and partnerships to kick off the new year. On Sunday, Anthropic announced Claude for Healthcare, a major addition to its healthcare and life sciences offerings. Its release came on the heels of rival OpenAI signaling its investment in the healthcare space with ChatGPT Health. Amid AI bubble chatter and scrutiny on the increasing AI investments made by tech companies, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has argued that Anthropic has built a more sustainable business model that allowed it to make more educated bets on its future build-out. While he did not name OpenAI or CEO Sam Altman directly, he made some thinly veiled criticisms of his former company throughout the event. "I think because we focus on enterprise, I think we have a better business model," Amodei said at The New York Times' Dealbook Summit. "I think we have better margins. I think we're being responsible about it." Google, which some experts saw as overtaking OpenAI at the end of 2025, announced a major deal with Apple to have Gemini power Siri's artificial intelligence capabilities.
