Smartphones Without the Sticker Shock#

The smartphone market has reached an inflection point where budget devices deliver capabilities that would have been flagship-exclusive just a few years ago. For consumers who view technology as a tool rather than a status symbol, this shift represents a significant opportunity to save money without sacrificing essential functionality.

Modern budget phones—typically priced at $500 or under—offer reliable performance, capable cameras, and increasingly robust durability features. While they may lack some premium bells and whistles, they provide everything most users need for daily tasks, communication, and entertainment.

The trade-offs are predictable but manageable: slower processors compared to flagship models, less storage capacity, and cameras that may struggle in challenging lighting conditions. Many also feature lower-resolution screens and less comprehensive water resistance. However, for the average user, these compromises often represent acceptable savings of hundreds of dollars.

The iPhone 16E: Apple's Budget Entry#

The iPhone 16E serves as the spiritual successor to the iPhone SE, bringing flagship-level A18 processor performance to Apple's most affordable new device. Priced at $599, it represents the cheapest entry point into Apple's current ecosystem, though the price feels steep when considering its limitations.

The device delivers reliable performance and a good, if limited, camera system. Its single 48-megapixel rear camera lacks the ultrawide lens found on newer iPhone models, and Apple retained the older "notch" design rather than adopting the Dynamic Island. These trade-offs are understandable given the price point, but one omission proves harder to justify.

Most notably, the 16E lacks MagSafe—the magnetic charging and accessory system that has been standard on virtually every iPhone since 2020. While the device supports wireless charging, users cannot take advantage of the magnetic accessory ecosystem without adding a case. For those upgrading from older iPhones who simply want a new device at the lowest possible cost, the 16E delivers the core iPhone experience.

If I were making this recommendation to you face-to-face, you'd hear a heavy sigh. Yes, this is the cheapest new iPhone Apple makes. Yes, it comes with most of the things that make an iPhone an iPhone. But it comes with some significant tradeoffs.

Google Pixel 9A: Android Excellence#

Google's Pixel 9A represents the culmination of years of refinement in the midrange Android space. At $499, it delivers robust IP68 water resistance, a brighter and larger 6.3-inch OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, and the reliable Tensor G4 chipset that runs cooler than previous generations.

The camera system includes a 48-megapixel main sensor with optical image stabilization, a 13-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 13-megapixel selfie camera. While it may not match the low-light performance of the premium Pixel 9 series, it handles everyday photography competently. Portrait mode could be improved, but for most users, the camera delivers satisfying results.

Perhaps most impressively, Google promises seven years of software updates, ensuring long-term support that rivals or exceeds many flagship competitors. The 5,100mAh battery provides solid endurance, and the device supports 23W wired and 7.5W wireless charging.

  • IP68 rating for water and dust resistance
  • 120Hz OLED display for smooth scrolling
  • Seven years of guaranteed software updates
  • Tensor G4 chipset with reliable performance

OnePlus 13R: Screen and Battery Champion#

The OnePlus 13R targets a specific user: someone who prioritizes a large, beautiful screen and exceptional battery life above all else. At $599.99, it's a pared-down version of the company's flagship, built around the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor.

The standout feature is its 6.78-inch, 120Hz OLED display with a 1264 x 2780 resolution. This expansive screen makes the device ideal for media consumption, gaming, and productivity tasks. Complementing the display is a massive 6,000mAh battery that can easily last two full days for moderate users, supported by 80W wired charging that refills the battery rapidly.

The camera setup includes a 50-megapixel main sensor with OIS, a 50-megapixel 2x telephoto lens, an 8-megapixel ultrawide, and a 16-megapixel selfie camera. However, the device lacks wireless charging and carries only an IP65 splash resistance rating, meaning it can handle rain and spills but not full submersion. It also receives fewer OS updates compared to Google and Samsung offerings.

The OnePlus 13R isn't quite as well-rounded as my pick for the best overall budget Android phone, the Pixel 9A. It's also a little pricier at $599—although we've seen it on sale for $499 for extended periods of time—but for some people, the 13R's upgrades will make it a better choice.

The Competitive Landscape#

The budget smartphone market extends well beyond the top three recommendations, with several compelling alternatives that cater to different priorities and price points.

The 2025 Motorola Moto G Power starts at $299.99 and offers remarkable value with its 6.8-inch LCD display, 5,000mAh battery, wireless charging support, and a rare 3.5mm headphone jack. Its combination of IP68 and IP69 ratings provides exceptional protection against water submersion, high-pressure jets, and steam.

Samsung's Galaxy A36 5G at $399.99 delivers a big OLED display, Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor, and IP67 rating. Samsung promises six years of OS and security updates, though the device drops the microSD slot in favor of a second SIM card slot. The Galaxy A56 at $499 offers a 6.7-inch OLED display, 50-megapixel camera, and 5,000mAh battery with 45W charging, but faces stiff competition from the Pixel 9A.

For those seeking unique designs, the Nothing Phone 3A and 3A Pro are available in beta at $379 and $459 respectively. Both feature 50-megapixel main cameras and an "Essential Space" feature for organizing screenshots and voice memos, with the Pro model adding a 3x periscope telephoto lens.

  • Motorola Moto G Power - $299.99 with wireless charging
  • Samsung Galaxy A36 5G - $399.99 with six years of updates
  • Samsung Galaxy A56 - $499 with 45W fast charging
  • Nothing Phone 3A series - $379-$459 with unique design

Choosing Your Perfect Match#

The budget smartphone landscape in 2026 offers unprecedented choice and capability. Your ideal device depends on which trade-offs you're willing to accept and which features matter most for your daily use.

For iPhone loyalists seeking the lowest entry price, the 16E delivers core Apple functionality despite missing MagSafe and an ultrawide camera. For Android users wanting the best overall package, the Pixel 9A's combination of water resistance, long-term updates, and reliable performance makes it the standout choice. If screen size and battery life are your priorities, the OnePlus 13R offers exceptional value despite its splash-only resistance and lack of wireless charging.

Looking ahead, the market continues to evolve rapidly. Google's Pixel 10A is already rumored to feature the Tensor G5 processor, while devices like the TCL Nxtpaper 70 Pro promise innovative matte displays designed to reduce eye strain. For now, however, these top budget picks prove that premium smartphone experiences are no longer reserved for those willing to spend $1,000 or more.

"The OnePlus 13R isn't quite as well-rounded as my pick for the best overall budget Android phone, the Pixel 9A. It's also a little pricier at $599—although we've seen it on sale for $499 for extended periods of time—but for some people, the 13R's upgrades will make it a better choice."

My favorite dietitian-approved spritz is just 4 ingredients — and it can be made with or without alcohol

Place cinnamon sticks inside the spritz for a festive touch. Rachel Hosie I make a four-ingredient, Aperol-based drink when I host, and it's a true crowd-pleaser. It's a lighter alternative to heavier cocktails, and you can easily make it nonalcoholic. It's also easy to upgrade with festive garnishes, such as rosemary sprigs and cinnamon sticks. For many, the Aperol spritz is reserved for daylight-saving time, falling into the same bucket as loose linen shirts and beach days. Once the clock falls back, the quintessential, three-ingredient summer cocktail — made with Aperol, Prosecco, and sparkling water — seems to go into hibernation. I, however, don't fall into that camp. The bright-orange, refreshing spritz is one of my year-round orders. I've found that with a couple of easy tweaks, an Aperol-based drink can actually be very versatile. My version of the classic recipe has become one of my favorite drinks in the fall and winter months, regardless of whether I'm on the sun-drenched Côte d'Azur or in my native drizzly England. Making the spritz is really easy — and it doesn't even need to contain alcohol I only need four ingredients to make this beverage. Rachel Hosie I've seen various versions of this cocktail online with slightly different ratios and ingredients. In my experience, you don't need to be too strict about it. You can alter the quantities based on your tastes and preferences, but for one simple spritz, I use the following: 2 ounces of Aperol or a nonalcoholic alternative 3 ounces of prosecco or nonalcoholic sparkling wine 2 ounces of apple or cranberry juice 1 ounce of soda water Pour the above ingredients into a glass with plenty of ice, and you're done. There's no shaking required. Although the above measurements yield one cocktail, I've scaled the recipe and served it in a large punch bowl or pitcher when hosting friends at my home. You can make it stronger by adding a splash of alcoholic spiced apple cider or go for a heavier Aperol pour. Just keep in mind that Aperol is a distilled spirit with 11% alcohol content, so even when it's diluted, it's worth being mindful of how many units you're having. To garnish the drink, you can use a sprig of rosemary, cinnamon sticks, dehydrated orange slices, or cranberries. One of my favorite touches is making big ice cubes with an apple slice or a star anise inside. And if you really love a sweet cocktail, coat the rim of your glass with a bit of cinnamon sugar. When enjoyed mindfully, this 'lighter' drink beats out heavier cocktails Whenever I host people at my home, I have the spritz cocktails ready to serve. Rachel Hosie I ran my recipe by dietitian Nichola Ludlam-Raine, who said that my festive spritz is a "lighter, more hydrating option" than many other popular holiday cocktails. As your glass empties, top up your drink with soda water, which Ludlam-Raine explains counteracts alcohol's diuretic effect and helps keep you from getting dehydrated. If you're not drinking at all, swap the Aperol for Crodini or Wilfred's aperitif and the prosecco for a nonalcoholic sparkling wine to create a tasty mocktail. "I would totally drink this myself and recommend it to my patients," Ludlam-Raine told me. "It's a great way of having a tasty drink without feeling like you're missing out if you're not having alcohol." Although Ludlam-Raine said that fruit juice adds flavor and antioxidants, you should be mindful of how much you use to keep your sugar intake in check. This is especially true if you're having multiple … which I always am because this drink is that delicious. Read the original article on Business Insider
