The Quest for Protection#

Putting a brand-new console into a protective case might feel counterintuitive, but it offers peace of mind against scratches and accidental damage. Since the Nintendo Switch 2 launched in June, numerous brands have released cases designed to fit the new hardware. Testing has covered everything from simple snap-on shells to full-featured carrying cases.

While carrying cases are essential for transport, form-fitting cases designed for use during gameplay require a higher standard. The ideal case should protect the device without hindering its functionality, whether in handheld mode or docked. After extensive testing, one model has emerged as the clear leader for its balance of protection and versatility.

Top Pick: Dbrand Killswitch#

The Dbrand Killswitch is the best overall case for the Nintendo Switch 2, scoring an 8/10 for its robust design and adaptability. It is designed for users who want maximum protection without sacrificing the ability to use the console's core features. The kit includes Joy-Con 2 grips, a rear cover, and a kickstand piece that all latch securely onto the components.

A key feature is its solution for docking. Because the case prevents the console from fitting into the standard dock, Dbrand includes a USB-C extender adapter. This allows the Switch 2 to remain protected while docked, though it leaves the screen exposed rather than concealed by the dock's wall.

Recommended Tier and Pricing:

  • Base Kit ($59.95): Includes rear cover, Joy-Con grips, kickstand piece, and a skin.
  • Travel Kit ($79.85): Adds a semi-transparent front cover, analog stick grips, and a 10-cartridge storage tray.
  • Ultra Kit ($99.80): Includes all Travel Kit items plus additional accessories.

Following the initial release, Dbrand redesigned the Joy-Con grips to address a detachment issue where shaking the console by a Joy-Con could cause it to fall. Previous buyers can request free replacements, and all new units ship with the improved design.

"Using a case relieves me of the worry that the console will accumulate tons of little scratches, or worse."

Budget & Runner-Ups#

For those seeking a more affordable alternative, the JSAUX Split Protective Case ($29.99) offers similar functionality at a lower price point. It includes two Joy-Con grips and a transparent shell that clips around the back and edges. Unlike the Killswitch, the JSAUX shell is thin enough to allow the console to fit into the dock without an adapter. It also features a hard front cover and storage for 10 cartridges.

However, there are notable trade-offs. The build quality may show minor imperfections, such as warped plastic near the buttons. More importantly, the Joy-Con grips exhibit the same potential detachment issue as the early Killswitch models, though it requires significant force to trigger.

Another runner-up is the JSAUX ModCase Ultimate ($59.99). This accessory pack features a base silicone case that adds bulkier grips for comfort. It includes a face plate for screen protection and a USB-C dock extender. The base kit ($29.99) includes a kickstand and a strap for holding a power bank.

Carrying Cases & Handheld Grips#

When it comes to zip-up carrying cases for transport, the Tomtoc FancyCase-G05 ($36.99) stands out for durability and style. It features bulbous sections on the outer cover to provide vertical clearance for the analog sticks, preventing accidental presses. While it lacks extra pockets for cables, it offers superior protection and comes in color options resembling ice cream sandwiches.

Other carrying case options include:

  • PowerA Slim Case ($19.99): An inexpensive, slim option that stores 10 cartridges and protects the joysticks from external pressure.
  • Belkin Carrying Case ($29.99): Offers better materials, a mesh pocket, and a secret compartment for an AirTag. Belkin also sells a $69.99 version with an integrated 10,000mAh battery.
  • WaterField Designs CitySlicker ($129): A premium option featuring leather and waxed canvas or ballistic nylon, with fleece lining and multiple pockets.

For dedicated handheld use without docking, the Spigen Rugged Armor ($39.99) is a suitable all-in-one shell. It provides access to ports and vents while offering pronounced grips. However, the console must be removed from the case to dock it.

"Using a case relieves me of the worry that the console will accumulate tons of little scratches, or worse."

Future Developments#

The market for Nintendo Switch 2 accessories continues to evolve. Belkin has announced a new Charging Case Pro, debuted at CES 2026. This upcoming model aims to improve upon its previous charging case by eliminating the need for cables to connect the battery to the console. Instead, the Switch 2 simply nests into a cradle. The new case will also feature an external USB-C port for recharging and a screen displaying the battery percentage.

As more manufacturers release accessories, consumers will have an even wider array of choices tailored to specific needs, from heavy-duty protection to integrated power solutions.

Senate passes Defiance Act for a second time to address Grok deepfakes

The Senate has passed the Disrupt Explicit Forged Images and Non-Consensual Edits (DEFIANCE ) Act with unanimous consent, according to the bill’s co-sponsor Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL). The bill lets the subjects of nonconsensual, sexually explicit deepfakes take civil action against the people who create and host them. Deepfakes are a known issue online, but without the proper protections, easy access to AI-powered image and video generation tools has made it possible for anyone to create compromising content using another person's likeness. This has become a particular problem on X, where the integration of Grok, the AI assistant created by X's parent company xAI, makes it possible for anyone to turn the content of another person's post into an image-generating prompt. Over the last month, that's allowed users to create sexually explicit images of children, just by replying to a post with @grok and a request. In response, Ofcom, the UK's media regulator, has already opened an investigation into X for potentially violating the Online Safety Act. The chatbot has also been outright blocked in Malaysia and Indonesia. The DEFIANCE Act won't prevent Grok or other AI tools from generating nonconsensual deepfakes, but it would make creating or hosting that content potentially very expensive for anyone on the receiving end of a lawsuit. The Senate passed an earlier version of the DEFIANCE Act in 2024, but it stalled in the House. Given the urgency of Grok's deepfake problem, the hope is this new version of the bill won't see the same resistance. Congress passed an earlier piece of deepfake regulation last year, the Take It Down Act, with bipartisan support. That bill was focused on the companies who host nonconsensual, sexually explicit content, rather than the people exploited by it.
