Quick Summary#

Fanatics has officially announced the launch of Fanatics Studios, marking a significant expansion into the sports media and entertainment sector. This new venture is designed to create, produce, and distribute a wide variety of sports-related content. The move signals a strategic pivot for the company, which is primarily known for its dominance in sports merchandise and e-commerce.

The new studio will serve as a dedicated hub for creative production. It aims to leverage the massive fan base and data insights that Fanatics has cultivated over the years. By entering the media space, the company seeks to deepen its relationship with sports enthusiasts globally.

Key objectives for Fanatics Studios include:

  • Producing high-quality films and documentaries
  • Hosting and broadcasting live events
  • Developing original digital series

This expansion allows Fanatics to control the narrative around sports culture, offering content that complements its retail offerings. The initiative is expected to create new revenue streams and enhance brand loyalty across different platforms.

Strategic Expansion into Entertainment#

The creation of Fanatics%20Studios&type=organization" class="entity-link entity-org text-green-600 dark:text-green-400 hover:underline cursor-pointer">Fanatics Studios represents a calculated diversification strategy. Historically, Fanatics has focused on supplying official merchandise for major sports leagues. However, the company is now positioning itself as a holistic sports lifestyle brand. This shift acknowledges that modern sports consumption involves not just buying gear, but also consuming media content.

By entering the entertainment industry, Fanatics aims to capture the attention of fans during the off-season and between games. The studio will likely focus on storytelling that resonates with the core demographic of sports fans. This includes behind-the-scenes access, athlete biographies, and historical retrospectives.

The move aligns with broader industry trends where retail and media converge. Companies increasingly seek to own the entire customer journey, from discovery to purchase to ongoing engagement. Fanatics Studios is the media arm of that strategy.

Content Focus and Production 🎬#

Fanatics Studios has outlined a clear content roadmap. The division is tasked with the full lifecycle of media production: creation, production, and distribution. This comprehensive approach ensures that the studio maintains quality control from concept to final delivery.

The studio's output will be varied to appeal to different audience segments. The primary content categories include:

  • Feature Films: Narrative-driven movies based on sports stories.
  • Documentaries: Non-fiction explorations of athletes, teams, and sporting events.
  • Live Events: Broadcasting of sports competitions and fan gatherings.
  • Digital Series: Episodic content designed for online platforms and social media.

This diverse portfolio allows Fanatics Studios to experiment with different formats. It also provides flexibility in distribution, potentially utilizing streaming services, social media channels, and traditional broadcast partners. The focus on digital series suggests a strong emphasis on reaching younger, mobile-first audiences.

Impact on the Sports Industry#

The entry of Fanatics into media production is likely to have ripple effects across the sports landscape. As a company with deep ties to leagues and players associations, Fanatics Studios may gain unique access that traditional media companies cannot secure. This could result in exclusive content that drives viewership and merchandise sales simultaneously.

Furthermore, the studio serves as a powerful marketing tool. Instead of relying solely on third-party advertising, Fanatics can promote its merchandise within its own content. For example, a documentary series could seamlessly feature the latest official jerseys and apparel. This creates a closed-loop ecosystem where content drives commerce.

The establishment of Fanatics Studios underscores the evolving nature of sports media rights and production. It highlights how data-driven retail companies are evolving into content powerhouses, blurring the lines between shopping and entertainment.

Star Wars Outlaws developer Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm face layoffs

We aren't even two weeks into the new year and Ubisoft is already looking to carry out its second round of layoffs in 2026. The company has informed workers at Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm of a "proposed organizational restructure" that could affect around 55 roles across its two Swedish studios. Workers at Massive (the developer of The Division series, Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora) were offered voluntary buyouts late last year as part of Ubisoft's ongoing cost-cutting efforts. "This restructure follows the completion of the Voluntary Leave Program launched during the fall of 2025, a finalized long-term roadmap and a completed staffing and appointment process, which together have provided clearer visibility into the structure and capacity required to support the two studios’ work and sustainably over time," Ubisoft told IGN in a statement. "These proposed changes are forward-looking and structural, they are not related to individual performance, recent deliveries or the quality of the work produced by the teams." Ubisoft claims that the "long-term direction for the studios remains unchanged." Massive will continue working on projects that include The Division 3. Ubisoft Stockholm, meanwhile, is beavering away on a new franchise that's still under wraps for now. That project is harnessing the studio's Ubisoft Scalar cloud computing tech, according to Game Developer. Earlier in January, the company said it was shutting down Ubisoft Halifax, resulting in the loss of 71 jobs. Workers at that studio unionized just 16 days earlier. Ubisoft said its decision was part of "company-wide actions to streamline operations."
